SMS FAQ
Common questions about pricing options for SMS messaging.
SMS works on every mobile phone. SMS is the most widely supported mobile messaging channel globally. Unlike app-based messaging platforms, SMS:
- Does not require internet access
- Works on all mobile devices directly through mobile network operators
SMS is ideal for:
- OTPs
- Alerts
- Reminders
- Notifications
- High-reach messaging
Pricing depends on destination country and mobile network operators.
SMS pricing varies depending on:
- The destination country
- Mobile network operator
- Sender ID type
- Routing requirements
Some countries may include:
- Local regulations
- Sender ID restrictions
- Network-specific pricing
International pricing may apply. If your business sends messages outside its home country, international routing rates may apply.
For example: A UK business sending to UK subscribers will qualify for local pricing. A South African business sending to UK subscribers may be charged international pricing.
SMS messages are calculated based on character length and encoding. Longer messages are split into SMS parts
Character encoding:
- Standard GSM characters (e.g. A-Z, a-z, 0-9) | 160 characters per SMS
- Unicode characters (e.g. emojis, accented letters, special symbols) | 70 characters per SMS
- If your message exceeds the limit, it will be sent as multiple SMS parts.
- Each part is charged as a separate SMS.
For example: 280 GSM characters = 2 SMS | 160 characters = 1 SMS | 280 characters = 2 SMS
